WINTERREISE
Franz Schubert's celebrated 1928 song cycle 'Winterreise' based on the poems of Robert Müller published a century before. This series of images was inspired by the titles and tone of the song cycle, and in learning more about photographer Liesl Beer, who was killed in the Holocaust aged 28. She was the younger sister of my grandmother Lene, and my middle name stands in her memory as does this series.
Informed by the cyclical, necessary melancholy of winter and of loss and change: both Schubert and Müller died in their early 30s, a century apart. The series stands also in gratitude for the annual promise of spring.
LA LA LAND
Raised in deepest Fife, Scotland, for two sunny years my family moved to a 70s to Los Angeles where I experienced school life in Santa Monica and the Hollywood Hills. Since then I have returned each decade, with first one child then two, and together we've revisited my childhood while I experience it all again through their eyes. It is very changed but still full of high contrast full colour inspiration.
